At the Africa Cup of Nations Libya participated twice: in 1982, when the country was host of the tournament, the unknown team surprisingly reached the final, which it lost against Ghana on penalties at his first participation. 2006 Libya was qualified for the second time, but could not prevail in the heavy preliminary round group with the eventual finalists Egypt and Ivory Coast.

Originally Libya should host the African Cup in 2013, because of the civil war and the unstable security situation in the country South Africa was determined as the new host. Libya will instead host the African Cup of Nations 2017.
