The Siberian gold piston ( Ligularia sibirica ) is a species of the genus of the gold piston in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae).

Description

The Siberian gold piston grows as a perennial herbaceous plant, the plant height of 0.5 cm to 1.5 m, occasionally reaching up to 2 meters. The rhizome is short and thick, the stems are erect and unbranched. Prior to the development of inflorescences many undergraduate leaves are formed in a semi- rosette. The leaves are divided into a long petiole and leaf blade one. The lamina of the lower leaves are deeply cordate - triangular, 10-15 cm long and 8 to 12cm wide with sharp serrated leaf edge. The upright, unbranched stems are leafy below sparse and possess above brownish-red scale leaves.

The flowering period extends from late June to September. In a terminal, 3-5 cm wide, aged men total inflorescence short -stalked, basket- shaped part inflorescences are summarized. The flowers are yellow. The flower heads each contain eight to ten golden-yellow ray flowers that are pollinated by various insects.

The achenes are spread by the wind. You have a dirty brownish white pappus.

Occurrence

The Siberian gold piston is used in the continental area of Eurasia. It is bound to moist locations. The main distribution area is the European part of Russia and the Siberian taiga zone. The incidence ranges in the east to Yakutia and to the south coast of the Okhotsk Sea. In the west part of the areas are disjoint. There are, among other deposits in the Eastern Pyrenees, in the Massif Central, in Lower Austria, the Czech Republic and in the Carpathians. The only Austrian occurrence is located in a village near Bern Kalkflachmoor and was not discovered until 1957. In this one case, it is not clear whether it is a Glazialrelikt or a Neueinbürgerung. In Austria, the species is classified as " critically endangered ".

Use

In China, the subspecies Ligularia sibirica subsp. speciosa ( Schrad. ) DC. used as food. For this, the leaves of the plant are boiled. In Europe, the Siberian gold piston is treated as a perennial for the ornamental garden.
