Lilydale, Tasmania

Lilydale, originally called German Town, is a small town in the northeast of the Australian state of Tasmania. It is located 28 km north-east of Launceston, 10 km north-west of Mount Arthur and is part of the Local Government Area Launceston City. At the 2006 census, 288 inhabitants were counted.

Origin of the name

The city of German Town ( or Upper Piper ) was established in 1887 at the suggestion of E. Kowarzic, the head of Tankerville Road Trust, renamed in Lilydale, because this noticed that the churches were there always decorated during festivals with Christian lilies, for which the region is still is known.

Attractions

The most famous sights are the Lilydale Falls, two small waterfalls, Mount Arthur and painted a series of telegraph poles along the main road.

Sports

Since 2011, Lilydale has its own Australian Football Teram, a bowl team and a small boxing club. Also there is an outdoor pool.

North - Eastern Railway

Lilydale and the neighboring communities Karoola and Turners Marsh lying on the railway line from Launceston to Scottsdale, which opened on 9 September 1889.
