Lin Hwai-min

Lin Hwai- min (Chinese林怀民, Pinyin Lín Huaimin, born February 19, 1947 in Chiayi, Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese dancer, choreographer and writer. He is the founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.

Life

In 1947 he was in the community Xingang新港 乡in Chiayi area嘉义 区(today Chiayi County ) born of Tainan County in Taiwan. His great-grandfather was from Longxi Lin Weichao in Zhangzhou漳州and in 1887 ( Guangxu 13) had passed the licentiate ( Xiucai ). His grandfather Lin Kaitai was a trained doctor in Japan, his father Lin Jinsheng the first district of Chiayi County.

1961 visited Lin Hwai- min with 14 years of the first middle school in Taichung. In that year, the American dance company of José Limón came to Taiwan and woke Lin Hwai -min's interest in modern dance. In that time also fall first literary attempts, one of the major newspapers, the United Daily News, printed his story " children's song " ( Erge ). With the fee he attended a two-month first dance class. The next year he moved to the Weidao High School and was in 1965 the university entrance exam. In 1967, the Taiwanese dancers Wang Renlu王仁璐at a performance in Taipei's Zhongshan Hall first modern dance by Martha Graham a. Lin was intrigued by Graham's modern choreography and wanted to study their dance technique. In 1969 he published at age 22 the narrative Chan蝉(title of the English translation: Cicada ) and went to the exam to the University of Missouri in order to record a master's degree in journalism. He also coached at the university dance school modern dance and studied with Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. In 1972 he completed his studies at the Institute of English literature in the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa with a Master of Fine Arts. The following year he returned to Taipei and founded the first modern dance - dance company in Taiwan, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.

In 1980 he received the sixth National Art Prize Taiwan ( National Award for Arts in Taiwan ) and the third Wu Sanlian Art Prize. With 36 years he founded in 1983 the Department of Dance at the Taipei National University of the Arts. 1986 the price of his life's work in the category of Asian artists from the New York City Department of Culture awarded him. The books wu Shuo说 舞( " About Dance " ) and Ca jian guo he擦肩而过" In passing touched " published in 1993 in Yuanliu -Verlag Taipei. 1996 was followed by a stay at the Graz Opera, where the opera was Rashomon. Lin Hwai- min in 1997 Honorary Member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. At 53 he 1999 also known as the " Asian Nobel Prize " Ramon Magsaysay Award was presented. In Cambodia, he helped dancers in designing a curriculum for traditional dance and saved Khmer dances from oblivion. 2000 Lin was chosen by the magazine Dance Europe to the "great choreographers of the 20th century." The journal International Ballet chose him in the same year for " Personality of the Year ". Lin Hwai- min was 2002 Honorary Doctor of National Chiao Tung University, 2006 Honorary Doctor of National Taiwan University. The Discovery Channel showed 2005 documentation Portraits Taiwan: Lin Hwai- min. On 12 May 2009 he was awarded the Movimentos Dance Festival for his life's work.
