The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Napoli ( Italian, Urban Rail Traffic Naples) is a suburban rail system, which is operated analogously German S -Bahn systems around the southern Italian city of Naples by Trenitalia.

History

The construction of the railway line Roma - Formia -Naples a railway tunnel under the city of Naples was built. On this 1925 put into operation four track tunnel stations and other city stations were built, making an urban rail transport was introduced ( from Naples to Villa Literno ).

The system was called the Metropolitana ("U -Bahn " ) and should be in the fascist propaganda to the subway systems of foreign cities remember ( Italy had until 1955 a pure underground, in Rome). However, the city trains operated irregularly, because the track was also used by many fast trains.

Until 1935 the track was electrified with power rail. After the usual in Italy 3 kV overhead line has been introduced.

Today, the city trains reach regional objectives ( Capua, Castellammare di Stabia, Formia and Salerno).
