Lira ( official spelling, though many Baganda in Kampala city Lila name ) is a city in northern Uganda with 119 302 inhabitants. It is the third largest city of Uganda and the capital of the district lira and the center of the people of the Langi. Lira has the status of a Municipality ( LC4 ).

The city is divided into Central - Ojwina - Adyel - and Railways Division. In the north of the city of Ngetta -Hill rises ( 1245 m asl ).

History

In Lira met during the 20 - year civil war over and over again militant representatives of the warring ethnic groups Lango, the center of the district capital is Lira and Acholi each other. Also, it came regularly to violence between the Ugandan government army and rebels of the Lord 's Resistance Army (LRA). The town of Lira grew during this period by the displaced persons from the original 90,000 to approximately 190,000.

The Ugandan health care is inadequate due to the many people refugees. European carriers have therefore taken the care in the district capital. Personalities
