Reception

The film is a tribute to the city Lisbon, during their year as European Capital of Culture in 1994, but also to the cinema to its hundredth birthday. The old masters of European art cinema, Manoel de Oliveira, Wenders honors here with a guest appearance as himself Wenders also plays on his film The state of things in which he turned here in 1981. So again plays Patrick Bauchau the director, and his name (" Monroe " ) is a reference to 1981, where he was called " Munro ".

The film captures the charm of the narrow streets in the old quarters of Lisbon, and makes do without clichés. He has beautiful photographs of the city, through subtle sense of humor and a calm, warm and poetic atmosphere. It gives the spectator the mystery of Friedrich Monroe and his film project track, as is the budding romance between Phillip and Teresa Salgueiro winter, the enchanting singer of Madredeus. Their exclusive movie music made the group internationally known, and came under the title Ainda (Portuguese for " still " ) in various European countries into the charts, also in Germany. In brief supporting roles the actor Portuguese Henrique Canto e Castro as a hairdresser, and film director João Canijo occur as a Little Rascal.
