List of Presidents of the Senate of France

The French Senate is the upper house of parliament. It is headed by a president. Although there were in the First and Second Empire Senate, so they had less of a legislative power, but given an advisory role - similar to the model of the Roman Senate.

France had his first experience with a House of Lords under the Directory from 1795 to 1799, when the council of elders, with its 250 members presented the upper chamber. With the restoration in 1814, the new chamber of the high nobility was established that the model for the British House of Lords. First sat in it only the high hereditary nobility, but in the course of the July Revolution of 1830 it was a corporation for which it was appointed for life.

The Second Republic came after 1848 back to a unicameral system. Shortly after the beginning of the Third Republic was installed as a Senate upper chamber. In the Fourth Republic, the Senate was renamed the Council of the Republic, but its function remained largely the same. With the Fifth Republic, including the ancient name of the Senate was restored.

The President of the Senate under the Constitution of the Fifth Republic in addition to the Presidency through the Upper House of Parliament has another important function: In the event of resignation or the death of the president, he is the interim president of the Republic may be held until a new election
