List of Scottish royal mistresses
As mistress (French: maîtresse = mistress, mistress) referred to a publicly known as such a beloved princes, high-ranking nobles or important official. In social relations, where marriages were primarily closed under political and material aspects, men often had a concubine ( " concubine " ), which they, because that would have been impossible anyway, not trying to keep it a secret, but "half" legitimized. Mostly, they had to give them a closer emotional and mental relationship as their wife. Some royal mistresses had not insignificant political influence. The term was commonly used as a synonym for " lover ", but is outdated in this sense today. A now also become historically synonymous is the favorite, but this term refers probably a less official status as the mistress.
