List of universities in Belgium

In the federal state of Belgium, the legislative power is about colleges and universities in the hands of communities. The universities in Belgium are thus recognized by the Flemish, the French and German-speaking Community. The communities also determine which diplomas may be awarded the Institute. Most universities are French or Dutch-speaking. German -language full - universities, there are not, but probably since 2005, the Autonomous University in the German-speaking Community with bachelor's degree programs for nurses, primary school teachers and kindergarten ( inside ).

Overview

In Belgium there are for the academic training relevant universities and colleges that provide science-based applied knowledge. In addition, there are other institutes that offer more than a high school beyond studies, eg the art colleges and the University of seafaring.

At Belgium's universities, there are three cycles. Before the Bologna Process, the first stage of study ended after two to three years with the academic degree of candidate ( fr. candidat, nl. Kandidaat ), the building on the first degree second cycle lasted about two to four years and is a professional specialization with graduating as a Licentiate ( fr. licencié, nl licentiaat. ) or engineer ( fr. Ingénieur civil, nl. Burgerlijk engineering ). In the course of the Bologna Process since these degrees are the academic year 2005-2006 respectively called Bachelor and Master and the study duration of three years for Bachelor and harmonizes one to two for the master. Those seeking a career in science can then graduate to the doctor. In general, the promotion time was four to six years before Bologna. Since Bologna a doctorate takes at least three years.

Dutch-speaking universities

The universities and colleges in the Flemish Community have merged to cooperation organizations ( larger needles Associaties ). These include:

  • The Associatie KULeuven, founded in 2002, and 13 typically includes Catholic universities and colleges in Flanders.
  • The Associatie van Universiteit en Hogescholen Antwerpen ( AUHA ), which together include the four colleges of this city.

French -speaking universities

The universities of the French Community have also joined forces to three so-called academies ( fr. académies ):
