Loch Leven is a sidearm ( sea loch ) to the shores of Loch Linnhe. It lies on the west coast of Scotland in the district ( Council Area ), Highland and former District Lochaber. The hole formed a natural border between the former counties of Inverness -shire in the north and in the south of Argyll.

The Loch Leven has a length dimension of about 17 km, with a width of 90 m to 1.6 km. The only towns on its banks are Ballachulish, Glencoe and Kinlochleven at the head of the bay, where there was rich aluminum deposits.

On the south bank extends the Glen Coe, a valley in the Glen Coe Mountains, which gained notoriety in 1692 by the massacre of Glencoe. To a wider audience the fjord through the shot there filming of blockbusters like Braveheart or Rob Roy was known at least visually.

Transport links

Only in 1927 was the Loch Leven, by the completion of B863, a one-lane, starting from Glencoe leading to almost the entire hole Embankment, opened to traffic. The B863 meets in North Ballachulish, near the confines of Loch Linnhe, back on the A82 to Fort William and on to the Highland capital of Inverness. With the opening of the Ballachulish Bridge in 1975, the narrowness of Loch Leven to Loch Linnhe can be crossed over the A82 without Fährunterbrechung. Since 1966 the branch line was shut down after South Ballachulish, the Loch Leven is no longer reachable by train.
