Lode (Cambridgeshire)

Lode is a small village in East Cambridgeshire at the south end of the Fens. It is located north of the B1102 between Quy and Swaffham Bulbeck, 13 km (8 miles) northeast of Cambridge. The smaller settlement Longmeadow part of a district within the municipality Lode and lies to the east along the B1102.

Name

A Lode is an artificial channel for the drainage of the Fens, which has already been carried out in Roman times. The village's name comes from its location at the southern end of the Bottisham Lode, which flows into the River Cam.

History

Lode is a relatively young community, because it has been separated until 1894 from Bottisham.

Anglesey Abbey

Lode is mainly known for its spectacular Anglesey Abbey, a former mansion of the family of 1st Baron Fairhaven. On the National Trust owned public grounds there is also a working water mill.

Church

The present church was Reverend Hailstone, the former owners and occupants of Anglesey Abbey, built and consecrated in 1853. The Vicar of this church over the following 80 years from this family.

Village life

Children go to the Bottisham Community Primary School and then usually on the Bottisham Village College. Finally, they can go to Cambridge on one of the Further Education Sixth Form Colleges.
