Province

Loeriesfontein is a small town in the municipality Hantam, Namakwa District, Northern Cape Province in South Africa. in 2011 it had 2,744 inhabitants. It is located 65 km north-east of Nieuwoudtville in the intersection area of the roads R355 and R357. Loeriesfontein located 960 meters above the sea level.

Loeriesfontein is Afrikaans for " Loeries source ". The origin of the name is unclear, either the city after the Loerie bird ( Turacu corythaix ) was named, or alternatively by a Jewish traveling salesman with surname Luri.

History

The town developed in 1894 around a mom-and-pop store, which was founded by Fredrick Turner, a nephew of Charles Spurgeon. The shop still exists today and is operated by a descendant of the founder.

Attractions

As in the entire Namaqualand is one of the main attractions, which takes place annually between late August and early September desert bloom. Corresponding temperatures and rain provided unfolds here in a few days from the seemingly lifeless desert floor a million times the flowers. About 4,000 species of plants are known from this region.

Quiver trees

On the road between Nieuwoudtville and Louriesfontein there are large inventories of quiver trees (Aloe dichotoma).

Fred Turner Museum of Local History

Here more than 1000 exhibits from the period of the trek farmers are shown. Under The museum is housed in an old school building.

Outside is flowering in the spring, the museum is open by appointment only.

Here are 27 windmills from the region collected, restored and set up operational.
