Lommiswil (Swiss German Lommiswiu ) is a municipality in the district livers of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Lommiswil is located on 565 m above sea level. M., 5 km west-northwest of Canton main town of Solothurn (air line). The scattered village extends a scenic location on a broad, gently sloping terrain to the south terrace at the foot of the Jura, at the foot of Hasenmatt, around 130 m above the level of the river Aare.

The area of ​​5.8 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Jura south slope. The wide terrace of Lommiswil that slopes gently towards the Aare Valley towards, occupies the southern part of the municipality. It is bounded to the west by the Busletenwald from the valley of Loch Bach, in the east. To the north, the terrain turns into a thickly forested escarpment, known as the Foothills on the southern slope of the Hasenmatt. The northern border runs along the crest of the white stone necklace with Gitziflue ( 1'327 m asl. ); on the slope below the Hasenmatt meadow is with 1'360 m above sea. M. reached the highest point of Lommiswil. From the municipality surface 1997 12 % came from settlements, 43 % of forest and woody plants and 45 % to agriculture.

To Lommiswil include the settlement in the wood (607 m above sea level. M. ) above the village at the beginning of the steep slope and some individual farms. Population

With 1434 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Lommiswil belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 95.6 % are German, 0.9 % French-speaking and 0.9 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Lommiswil amounted in 1850 to 417 residents in 1900 to 656 inhabitants. During the 20th century the population commuted to 1960 in the range 740-820 inhabitants. Since then, a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Lommiswil was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming and fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In the church today operations of the construction and transport industry, computer science and fine mechanical workshops are represented. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Solothurn and Grenchen.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from Solothurn and Grenchen. The nearest links to the motorway A5 ( Solothurn- Biel) is located approximately 7 km from the town center. On August 1, 1908, the railway line in the Solothurn -Münster -Bahn from Solothurn to Moutier was taken with a station in Lommiswil and one stop at In wood in operation. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1292 under the name Luomolswile and Lomolzwile. Later, the names Lomelswile ( 1296 ), Lomolswile ( 1318 ), Lomoswile ( 1327 ) and Lomiswile ( 1429) appeared. The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Lobawalt. The name suffix - wil indicates a foundation by the Alemanni in the 8th or 9th century. The meaning of the name is therefore in the courts of the Lobawalt.

Lommiswil initially was under the rule Schauenburg, later belonged to the Western part of the reign Altreu and shared their fate. In 1375 the village and the Germanuskapelle were destroyed by the Guglern. Together with the rule Altreu came Lommiswil 1389 to the town of Solothurn and was in 1393 incorporated in the Bailiwick livers, where it was under the Selzach of court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged during the Helvetic Republic to the administrative district of Solothurn and from 1803 to the district livers.

Attractions

Lommiswil has two churches, but only forms since 1951 an independent parish; previously it belonged to the parish of Oberndorf. The old Church of Saint German, whose original building was created in the early Middle Ages, but was destroyed by the Guglern 1481 and rebuilt several times later restored or altered. In 1967, the concrete shell of the new Holy Spirit Church was inaugurated.

In the border area between Lommiswil and Oberndorf is situated on the southern slope of the Jura, a quarry with a viewing platform from which an interesting view of numerous footprints of dinosaurs offers ( dinosaur plate of Lommiswil ). The tracks were left in front of about 145 million years of Brachiosauriern in the sand along a flat tropical sea that covered large parts of central Europe at the time. The quarry is reached from BLS- stop in wood or Oberndorf on foot in about 20 minutes.
