Riedholz

Ried wood is a municipality in the district of livers of the canton Solothurn in Switzerland.

On 1 January 2011 merged with Niederwil Ried wood.

Geography

Ried wood lies on 471 m above sea level. M., 4 km north-east of the main town Canton of Solothurn (air line). The village is located on the grounds of a terrace deposited by glacial moraine north of the Rhone Glacier Aare, in the region of Lower Leberberg, in the Solothurn Plateau on foot of the Jura.

Population

With 2193 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Ried Wood is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 95.8 % are German, 0.8 % Italian-speaking and 0.7 % speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Ried wood amounted in 1850 to 400 residents in 1900 to 541 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased steadily until 1970 on 1459 people. Since then, relatively low population fluctuations were only recorded.

Economy

Ried wood has long been a predominantly coined by farming village. A major development thrust experienced Ried wood after the establishment of a pulp mill in Attisholz in 1881.

Today, the farming and fruit growing and cattle breeding have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population. Many other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available. History

The territory of Ried wood was inhabited very early on what could be proven by numerous finds of ceramic objects from the Roman period in Attisholz. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1367 under the name Riet Holtz; 1494 the name Riedt Holtz has survived. The name means as much as the reed-covered forest.

In the Middle Ages Ried wood was under the St. Urs pin in Solothurn in 1344 and came directly to the city of Solothurn, which from then on both the low and the high jurisdiction exercised.
