Lonnie Thompson

Lonnie G. Thompson ( born 1948 ) is an American paleoclimatologist and professor at Ohio State University who specializes in the study of tropical and subtropical mountain glaciers and ice caps. Together with his wife, Ellen Mosley - Thompson, he leads a research group at the Byrd Polar Research Center, which performs paleoclimate analyzes of ice cores.

Research

Lonnie G. Thompson studied geology at the Marshall University and Ohio State University. In the 1970s, he was the first paleoclimatologist which tropical ice caps took ice cores, in order to draw conclusions about the climatic conditions of the past.

Show His regular observations and studies of individual glaciers since the 1970s that tropical mountain glaciers worldwide are in retreat and melt. Special media coverage found his investigations of the ice cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, the end of the 19th century - though mainly due to lack of rainfall - is melting ..

In 2005, Thompson was a scientific advisor to Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
