Loreto (Baja California Sur)

Loreto on the map of Baja California Sur

Loreto is a town in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur with about 12,000 inhabitants.

Loreto was founded in 1697 by the Jesuit mission, the first and thus oldest Spanish settlement in all of California. At the same Loreto was the first capital of California and remained so until 1777, when the location in the northern Alta California Monterey became the capital.

The mission church with attached Missionary Museum and the historic center are preserved and restored. Since the entire city has not increased substantially, can be obtained during a visit to Loreto's an authentic feel of the Spanish colonial period.

Loreto is the only city in the radius of 300 kilometers, but has an international airport ( with connections to several Mexican cities and daily flights to Los Angeles ). To Loreto are cactus deserts, sandy beaches and rich fishing grounds as the main tourist attractions.
