Louis, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal

Ludwig Philipp of Hesse- Thal ( born October 8, 1766 Philippstal, † February 16, 1816 in Naples) was out of the house of Hesse, Landgrave of Hesse- Philippsthal.

Life

Louis was the son of Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse- Philippsthal (1726-1810) from his marriage with Ulrike Eleonora (1732-1795), daughter of the Landgrave William of Hesse - Philippsthal - Barchfeld.

First, in the Dutch, he went in 1791 in the service of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Here he became lieutenant-general, Lord Marshal, Governor of Caserta and Inspector of border fortresses.

In 1806 he was of Queen Maria Carolina with the defense of Gaeta in charge ( see also General Felix Schumacher ). During the French siege of Gaeta by André Masséna, he made fierce resistance. The surrender of the fortress he had with the words " Gaeta is not Ulm and Philippstal not Mack " denied. Badly wounded, he was taken by an English frigate to Sicily and his successor, gave the fortress eventually.

After his recovery he was appointed Captain-General. In 1810 he succeeded his father as Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal. He accompanied Queen Maria Carolina in 1814 on their way to the Congress of Vienna. In Philippstal he compared himself in connection with his brother and (from 1813) successor as Landgrave of Hesse - Philippsthal Ernst Konstantin.

Ludwig died in Naples and was buried in the fortress Gaeta.

Marriage and issue

Ludwig married on January 21, 1791 in Süsteren Countess Marie Franziska Berghe von Trips ( born August 8, 1771 and † 1805), it was you daughter of the chief huntsman Master Count Franz Alphons Berghe von Trips. The marriage took place without the knowledge of parents. The marriage was not recognized by Louis parents, he also had to leave the Dutch service because the officers marriage was forbidden by Roman Catholics. Marie Franziska could provide due to their kinship to her husband services in Naples. Marie Franziska acted later as Grand Mistress of Queen Maria Carolina.
