Operation and history

Prehistory

In the 1850s, the two grand duchies of Mecklenburg -Schwerin and Mecklenburg- Strelitz were planning an east -west connection through their territory. This should build on the existing connection Lübeck Lübeck - Büchener railway, the little state railway Hagenow -Wismar cross and continue using the existing railway line bath small - Rostock to Biitzow and Gustrow to Neubrandenburg. From there it should go about Strasburg over the border to Stettin. During the middle section was designed as a state railway line, the west section Lübeck -Small should be built and operated by a private company.

The newly founded to Lübeck- Kleinener Railway Company in 1865 was commissioned to build. This should be completed by 1867. However, there were delays in construction, as provided by the company route was modified several times and this was ultimately no longer financially able to build the track. After its liquidation, the Friedrich- Franz Railway took over the leadership of construction, closing these from 1870. On July 1, 1870 reversed the first train along the nearly 60 -kilometer route.

1870-1945

The track was initially not sonderlicher importance. So wrong in 1885 only a few passenger trains per day in both directions. The upswing came only in the early 20th century. Thus, the railway facilities were remodeled in Lübeck in 1907 /08 and reopened the Lübeck Central Station as the central station of the city. The concentration of all routes enabled by through trains from Hamburg via Lübeck, small and Neubrandenburg to Stettin. The compound had as Route number 118 lasted until the Second World War. For the ferry to Scandinavia via Warnemünde and Sassnitz it was of great importance.

1945-1989

After 1945 initially ended the continuous traffic on the link, as there was just east of Lübeck, the zone boundary between the British and the Soviet occupation zone. The second track was dismantled as reparations. After a brief resurgence of train movement 1952-1960 of traffic across the border of the Federal Republic and the GDR was reinstated. Since March 20, 1960 wrong besides some freight trains a Interzonenzugpaar from Hamburg via Lübeck to Rostock. The exact route of the train changed several times in the course of the year. In the first years of the train continued to Sassnitz with connection to the ferry to Sweden. Even after the train was often continue to Stralsund. At times he led coaches to Neubrandenburg. In the last years before the wall came down the train from Cologne to Hamburg to Rostock drove. For holidays perverted additional relief trains.

The control of the travelers in the Inter-Zone trains by the border authorities of the GDR took place in the Lord 's train station and in the train between Mr. and Bad kids. While checking in Mr. Castle trains stayed on the platform. Travelers who the train left here to continue the ride with a passenger train in the direction of Greve mills were handled in a separate control panel. This lasted until in the 1970s from old two-axle passenger cars that were parked on the opposite platform.

While on the West German side to the border not stop along the way was available and accordingly was worth no transport, remained on the East Branch Mr. Burg- bath small regional transport (1989 five pairs of trains from Mr. Castle, eight from Greve mills).

In the second half of the 1980s, the offer for another Eilzugpaar Lübeck- Schwerin was supplemented at weekends as part of the local border traffic. After the East German government enacted some easing of travel restrictions and the more GDR citizens than before the trip to the West was possible, an additional pair of trains Güstrow Hamburg was inserted in May 1989. It also held in Greve mills; the D- train Cologne to Rostock (only in this direction ) had been already some years before a traffic stop there.

Since 1989

After the fall of the walls took supply and demand on this route significantly. After the German reunification, the route part of the road project was therefore German Unit No. 1 This provided for the expansion of the connection Lübeck- Rostock- Stralsund for a speed of 160 km / h, however, to continue to bath small single track. The expansion has been slow and is still not completed.

The importance of each route has perverted every two hours since the mid- 1990s, when two long-distance lines ( Stralsund, Rostock- Hamburg and Berlin / Leipzig Lübeck- Kiel), dropped significantly. For one, the trains between Rostock and Hamburg were passed over the route Schwerin Büchenberg, on the other hand the inter-regional line Lübeck was - Leipzig complete set 2001. Since then, the route serves only regional trains.

The breakpoint Lübeck- St. Jürgen was put into operation on 15 December 2002. It opens up a part of the Lübeck South in the district of St. Jürgen.

Currently operating on the route following features:

Both regional express lines run every two hours, so there is an offer at hourly intervals in the section Lübeck- Bad little ones. During the RE6 Lübeck- Bad little ones in Lübeck- St. Jürgen, Mr. Castle, Schoenberg and Greve Mills holds the RE6 Lübeck- bath small -Stettin serving all intermediate stops in the section Lübeck- Bad little ones. It will operate on the currently diesel railcar class 628 used. Earlier the wrong trains with locomotives of the series 218 with n- cars.
