Luc Coene

Luc Coene (* March 1, 1947 in Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium) is a Belgian politician of the Flemish liberals Open en Democraten (Open VLD) and since 2011 the Governor of the National Bank of Belgium.

Biography

After school he studied economics at the University of Ghent and graduated with a licentiate. In 1973, he began his career with the Belgian National Bank, where he was initially an employee in the Information Service of the Department of Studies. Subsequently, he was from 1976 to 1979 employees in the service of International Agreements of the foreign department of the National Bank and 1979-1986 Assistant of the Belgian Governor of the International Monetary Fund ( IMF).

He was also a 1985 first Deputy Head of Cabinet of Minister of Finance Frans Grootjans and then from 1985 to 1988 by the then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Budget Guy Verhofstadt. After a year as a visiting scholar at the IMF, he was from 1989 to 1992 Economic Advisor at the Directorate General II of the European Commission. In 1995, he began his political career as a co-opted for the VLD as a member of the Senate and this remained until 1999.
