Verhofstadt I Government

The Belgian Government Verhofstadt I was 12 July 1999 to 12 July 2003 at the office. On July 17, 1999 spoke to her the Chamber of Deputies of the trust. The government consisted of fifteen Ministers (Prime Minister included) and three secretaries of state. In addition, three government commissioners were appointed.

This first of Guy Verhofstadt (VLD ) -led government was composed of the Flemish and Francophone Liberals (VLD and PRL), Socialists (SP and PS) and the Greens ( Agalev and Ecolo ) together. She was named " Rainbow Coalition " (Dutch rainbow, French arc-en -ciel ) based on the mix of blue, red and green ( the colors of the forming parties).

The Government Verhofstadt I was the successor of the Government Dehaene II, Jean -Luc Dehaene (CVP ), which in turn was compiled from Christian Socialists and Socialists. In particular, the Christian Socialists were punished in the federal elections of 13 June 1999, not because of the " Dutroux affair" ( Pädophilieskandal ) and the dioxin crisis ( dioxinvergiftete food), and had thus for the first time since 1958 again back into opposition.

During her term, the government has had a few personnel changes. So Jaak Gabriëls and Rudy Demotte covered respectively in the Flemish Government and the Government of the French Community, while first Pierre Chevalier (judicial problems in Switzerland ) and Magda Aelvoet ( protest against Belgian arms sales to Nepal ) prematurely declared their resignation. Two weeks before the elections also were the two representatives of the Francophone Green Ecolo, Isabelle Durant and Olivier Deleuze, inferred from the government back and let the legislature with an uproar end. This was due to disagreements over the flight line plan that certain night flights should result from the Brussels Zaventem Airport on the city of Brussels.

In the elections of 18 May 2003, the Greens lost numerous votes, while liberals and socialists could alone make a majority. On 12 July 2003 the Verhofstadt I government was replaced by the Government Verhofstadt II.
