Luís Cristóvão dos Santos

Luís Cristóvão dos Santos ( born December 25, 1916 in Pesqueira, Brazil, † June 30, 1997 in Recife, Brazil) was a Brazilian sociologist, anthropologist, folklorist, columnist, writer, lawyer and journalist.

He studied in Pesqueira and in Recife and graduated in 1944 with a Bachelor in Law and Social Sciences at the Faculdade de Direito do Recife from. He was after his studies prosecutor in various districts of the hinterland of Pernambuco. In the 1950s, he was chief of the newspaper Gazeta do Pajeú. From 1947 on, he was delegate of the União Democrática Nacional and was also elected to the Vice Chairman.

In 1955 he was a candidate of the Left for the Vice - Prefect of the city Arcoverde. He was involved in the cultural and political life of Pernambuco. After the early death of a child, he withdrew.

Since his youth dos Santos was a writer. He was also active as a journalist, among other things, he wrote for A Voz do Sertão, Gazeta do Pajeú, Diario de Pernambuco and the Jornal do Commercio and some other Brazilian media. He also contributed to several books, documentaries and film reports on the Brazilian jungle and Rio Pajeú.

He was a member of the Academia de Letras Pernambucana and Chair of the Department 12 of the Academia de Letras e Artes Pesqueirense, where he was the successor of Jarival Cordeiro do Amaral. Twice he received the Prêmio Othon Bezerra de Mello, first in 1955 for the book Caminhos do Pajeú that the sales lists in Rio de Janeiro led and finally in 1970 for Caminhos do Sertão more than a year. In 1970 he also received a Medal of Merit Fundação Joaquim Nabuco for his contributions to Brazilian culture, and was appointed in September of the same year an honorary citizen of Recife.

Dos Santos died on 30 June 1997 in the Santa Joana Hospital of the city of Recife from a stroke.
