Maclaurin (crater)

54.33

Maclaurin is an impact crater südöstwestlich the small Mare Spumans in the eastern part of the lunar front side. It is located northeast of the crater Langrenus striking and west-northwest of the crater Gilbert.

The crater structure of Maclaurin seems unusual, since a number of smaller craters connects to its outer edge. In the north, these are specifically the flooded by lava ' Maclaurin O' and ' Maclaurin K'. Along the north-east, east and south sides are also satellite crater. The three craters on the southern edge to which ' Maclaurin A' and ' Maclaurin N' belong are sufficiently penetrated into the main crater to flatten the outline at this point. The only free points on the periphery are located on the west side and a short distance to the southeast. Despite all Maclaurin shows a substantially circular shape.

The inner crater walls fall in a gentle slope to the flat crater floor from back. The central area was possibly newly formed by basaltic lava, and therefore, due to its darker tint has a slightly lower albedo. At the center of the crater floor is a low central ridge rises.
