Maher Shalal Hash Baz (band)

Maher Shalal Hash Baz ( MSHB ) is the artistic alter ego of the Japanese musician and composer naive music Tori Kudō (Japanese工藤 冬 里Kudō Tori ). The name is the Bible, from the Book of Isaiah, removed. In Isaiah 8:1 - 4, it literally " Be quick if you steal something! " Means ( translation by Tori Kudō: "Be quick if you steal something" ).

Tori Kudō speaks only evasive about details of his life before MSHB. He was a member of a shadowy, revolutionary party in Japan, gave his connections with the policy, however, after he joined the Jehovah's Witnesses. He also works as a ceramicist.

He says that he comes from the classical and jazz piano, played the organ in a Protestant church. Other musical influences are T.Rex and saxophonist Steve Lacy.

When they went to Tokyo, joined he and his wife Reiko at a band called Worst Noise. After the other members had left the band, were only Tori and Reiko, who henceforth simply called themselves Noise. Under this name they released an album with the title Emperor.

The impulse to MSHB came when Tori the Euphonium Player Hiro Nakazaki met on a construction site and they discovered their common interest in the music of Mayo Thompson and Syd Barrett.

The cast is changing, apart from the core trio ( Tori on guitar and singer, Reiko as a singer and Hiro - exclusively - on euphonium).

After several self-released cassette albums, the Japanese Org label Maher Goes To Gothic Country, and the 83 titles comprehensive box set Return Visit To Rock Mass brought out. The level of awareness of the band outside of Japan increased significantly when Stephen McRobbie ( The Pastels ) them a sub- label of Domino Records, got a contract with Geographic Music. MSHB published there two albums: The Compilation From A Summer To Another Summer (An Egypt To Another Egypt ) and the 41 titles full album Blues Du Jour. In addition, they released numerous singles and EPs on different labels.

Tori Kudō steadfastly refuses to define the sound of his band, although he stated in an interview with Tim Footman in Careless Talk Costs Lives magazine ( August 2002): "I'm a punk ." In addition, elements from the folk, psychedelia and free jazz are available; and the slope of the band to invite people from the audience to participate in the concerts, adds risk appetite. Perhaps the best description comes from the cover text of your own album From A Summer To Another Summer ". Error in performance dominates MSHB cassette Which is like our imperfect life" ( loosely translated: " " The error in the execution determines the MSHB cassette, equal to our imperfect life ").
