Makarora

Makarora is a small town in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. The place is very isolated immediately on the south side of the mountainous Mount Aspiring National Park. State Highway 6 runs through the town. The only road through these towns are connected to Makarora Haast 40 km northwest ( the road link through the mountains, however, is much longer and sometimes closed in winter) and Lake Hawea about 35 km south. The nearest major town is Wanaka, about 45 km south.

About 17 km north- west of Makarora is the Haast Pass Highway 6 The place is also located on the Makarora River.

Local tourist offers are sightseeing flights and jet boat rides on the Makarora River. Activities in the surrounding area include fishing, hunting and hiking in the national park.
