Makoto ÅŒoka

Makoto Ooka (Japanese大 冈 信, Ooka Makoto, born February 16, 1931 in Mishima / Shizuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese poet and literary scholar.

Life

Ooka studied until 1953 Japanese literature at the University of Tokyo. He then worked for ten years for the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun. In 1965 he started at Meiji University to teach and received in 1970 a professorship. From 1988 to 1994 he was professor at the University of Tokyo arts. He also served from 1979 to 1981 the " Japanese Society for contemporary poetry " and from 1989 to 1994, the PEN Center Japan.

As a poet Ooka 1956 Genzai debuted with the poetry Kioku to. In English translation, the poetry collections A String Around Autumn (1981) and Elegy and Benediction published (1991). However, he was known primarily for his literary writings as Chōgenjitsu to Jojo (1965) and Kotoba no chikara (1971 ), which were also translated into English and French ( and Others The Colors of Poetry: Essays in Classic Japanese Verse, 1991 ).
