Malte is a male first name with a Danish or German origin whose meaning is unknown.

Most likely he is a (slightly ) shortened form of North German name Helmold. The name has been used in Denmark since the 12th century and was over Skåne in Sweden catchment to which the province was in later times. The name is also common in northern Germany. The name is found in Danish as Malthe or in the older form Molte.
