Mandilaria

The red variety Mandilaria is the seventh most common red wine grape in Greece. Recommended is their cultivation on the island of Euboea, in the region of Attica, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete. It is also grown in the Peloponnese in the regions of Elis and Messenia. The area under vines was the late 1990s, approximately 1590 hectares.

The late-ripening variety with their thick-skinned, hard and dark berries provides low-alcohol wines with a little body and structure that can be expanded dry to sweet. Varietal red wines there is therefore hardly in Crete it is often blended with the grape Kotsifali. It is used in the wine Retsina, Peza and Archanes and on Paros.

The grape is also known under the name Mandilaria Amorgiano, Amorghiano known ( Rhodes ), Dombrena Mavri, Doubrena Mavri, Doumpraina Mavri, Doympraina Mavre, Koundour, Kountoura or Kountoura Mavri, Koutoura, Mandelaria, Mandilari, Mantilari and Mantilaria.
