Manolis Triantaphyllidis

Manolis Triantaphyllidis, also Triantafyllidis (Greek Μανόλης Τριανταφυλλίδης, * November 15, 1883 in Athens, Greece, † 20 April 1959 ) was a major modern Greek linguists, grammarians, Demotizist and educator. He achieved fame primarily for his grammar of the modern Greek vernacular (1941 ), which is relevant to this day.

Life and work

Triantaphyllidis was for decades a prominent figure of the modern Greek intellectual life and science. In 1910 he participated as a founding member of the Liberal Education Association ( Εκπαιδευτικός Όμιλος ) along with Dimitrios Glinos and Alexandros Delmouzos an important role and stood on the language issue on the side of the vernacular. From 1917 to 1920 he was Supreme Overseer of Public Education ( Ανώτερος Επόπτης της δημοτικής εκπαίδευσης ). 1941 published Triantaphyllidis - with a foreword by the then-ruling fascists Ioannis Metaxas - his famous grammar of modern Greek vernacular, which was translated into 14 languages ​​and is still used by linguists as a reliable and competent source. Triantaphyllidis was a professor at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki.
