Manseng Noir

Manseng Noir is an ancient red wine grape that is grown in the wine region of Sud -Ouest in the southwest of France. It is part of the appellation wine Béarn, otherwise it is however rarely used.

The red wines are deep in color and tannins (tannins ). Due to a high content of acid ( acid → (wine) ) the wines require a long aging in the bottle before presenting themselves tannins and acidity in balance. The variety is therefore hardly to market yet and the area under vines decreased from 790 hectares in 1958 to about 4 acres in 1999.

Previously, the variety in the region around Irouleguy was grown in the Joint block with the vine Courbu Noir and marketed under the undifferentiated term Noirs du Pays ( herriko beltza ).

A study published in 2007 study shows that the varieties Baroque, Manseng Noir and Tannat are genetically very closely related. There is also a striking similarity to the species and the Malbec variety is genetically Claverie also closely related to this group. The variety Raffiat de Moncade has familial characteristics.
