Marcel van Eeden

Marcel van Eeden ( born November 22, 1965 in The Hague, Netherlands) is a Dutch draftsman and painter. From 1989 to 1993 he studied painting at the Royal Academy of Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. Van Eeden lives and works in Zurich and The Hague. Characteristic of the work van Eeden is the reminiscent of the film noir-like, which is due to almost photo- realistic renderings and the use of black -and-white contrasts. A wider audience, he was known for his contribution to the Berlin Biennale in 2006.

Work

Marcel van Eeden is best known for his drawings in which he works mainly with charcoal pencils. Occasionally, he used colored pencils or water color. The drawings usually have the format 19 × 28 cm. Daily created a drawing that he published from 2001 to 2007 in his blog. In 2007 he finished his blog and turned for the first time since his studies of painting, at the same time he draws continue.

Both in painting and in the drawings, he used a variety of templates, but all from the years before his birth, ie before 1965, date. This project is called van Eeden " Encyclopedia of my death ." The templates include photographs, exhibition catalogs, clippings from newspapers, magazines and magazines or fabric pattern. Many works show evening cityscapes, fires, abstract shapes and patterns, as well as shorter, transmitted with template text. By focusing van Eeden upon the de facto infinite amount of time before his birth, he takes his own existence come true as a marginal part of the time stream, and so highlights the finitude of his own existence.

Also in the way van Eeden builds his images, he makes no distinction between painting and drawing, in both techniques, he pursues a picturesque approach, as it is based on the pictures on the grays, less over the line. He compares his approach with that of Edgar Degas ' pastel chalk drawings.

2004/2005 van Eeden began drawings for series of different sizes together. This he realized through texts among others Robert Walser's "walk", which extended over several drawings or by repeatedly emerging figures. The first big block, which originated in this way, was the 150 - part series " K. M. Wiegand. Life and Work ", 2006. KM Wiegand is a historically -guaranteed botanist, whose biography was quoted in short passages of text on the drawings. By combining with images that do not necessarily have anything to do with the particular passage of text, van Eeden constructed a fictional biography of the botanist. This method he also employed in later series such as " Celia ", 2004-2006 and " The archaeologist. The Travels of Oswald target man ", 2007 and " The Death of Matheus Boryna ", 2007. The protagonists of this series, C.M. Wiegand, Celia Copplestone, Oswald target man and Matheus Boryna, he led together in " Witness for the prosecution" (2008).
