Marco Caneira

Marco Caneira [ kɐnɐiɾɐ ] (born 9 February 1979 in Negrais, Sintra; Marco António Simões actually Caneira ) is a Portuguese football player.

Career

In the initial phase of his career he was often loaned out to other clubs to play matches. So he moved to SC Salgueiros, SC Beira Mar and FC Alverca, where he gained first experiences.

Caneira debuted in the Portuguese national team and was nominated by António Oliveira in the squad for the FIFA World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea. During the tournament, he came, however, not to use, already retired from Portugal in the group stage.

After the World Cup Caneira transferred for a transfer of 1,500,000 € to France to Bordeaux, where he was an integral part of the team in the first season, the table was fourth at the end of the season. In the following season Caneira cemented his place in the starting eleven and came in almost every competitive game used.

Caneira was not nominated the 2004 European Football Championship on home soil, but aroused the interest of the former Spanish champions and UEFA Cup winner FC Valencia. For a fee of € 2 million to Valencia secured the services of outside counsel. In October 2004 he made his debut in the Champions League, which is against the groups ended with a disappointing 1:5 against the Italian giants Inter Milan. But during his time at Valencia he succeeded positive, including his first goal in a league match against Real Zaragoza.

After he no longer as common as previously was used in the first round of the 2004/2005 season, Caneira returned on loan to Sporting Lisbon. There he was able to recommend for the Football World Cup 2006, for which he was nominated by Luiz Felipe Scolari. In the final group game against Mexico, he played for the whole 90 minutes.

For the 2007/2008 season Caneira returned to FC Valenca, because his loan contract expired. He came regularly used, not only in the club. In the National Caneira got so much use time like never before, and had his share of it that Portugal failed to qualify for the 2008 European Football Championship, for which he was not taken into account.

In 2008 he finished his chapter in Spain for the time being and returned again to Sporting Lisbon, for which he was now the third time under contract.

Since 2011 Caneira plays in the Hungarian League for the Videoton FC.
