Marcus Goldman ( born December 9, 1821 in Trappstadt, Lower Franconia, † July 20, 1904 in New York City ) was a German - American businessman and founder of the investment bank Goldman Sachs

Life

Marcus Goldman was born in 1821 in Trapp city in the district court district Königshofen in Lower Franconia. He was the eldest son of five children of the Jewish couple and Ella Wolf Goldmann. His father was " Handelsjud " cattle trader and economist from the small Fachwerkort Zeil am Main Regional Court District Haßfurt - Eltmann. He was (now Kaulberg 6) was born on February 16, 1794 at number 57 in Zeil, the son of Jandorf Goldmann ( 1759-1841 ) and his wife Bella / Babette ( died on December 4, 1825 in Zeil am Main, 66 years old). Maybe family Goldmann was originally from the village of Knetzgau on the opposite side of the Main. In 1848 he emigrated from Frankfurt to the United States.

In 1850 he married Bertha Goldman, with whom he had five children. Bertha Goldman was also emigrated in 1848 at the age of 19 years from Bavaria to America. He had met her in Hausiererviertel in Pennsylvania, where he pursued the profession of an embroiderer and thus earned their livelihood. With the help of his wife, he then built a clothing store in Philadelphia and later gave her insistence after to move the residence to New York.

In 1869, four years after the Civil War, he founded in New York City, in Pine Street, to buy up in a Einzimmerbüro the M. Goldman & Company, a firm that was initially specialized in customer notes of tobacco and diamond merchants in Manhattan which he used to wear under his top hat. For a small profit, he sold the exchange to banks. 1882 joined his son Samuel Sachs joined the company. With the arrival of his son Henry Goldman in 1885, the name changed in M. Goldman & Sachs, it was the world-renowned bank Goldman Sachs, the bank proceeded to open up new investment capital for companies, and quickly expanded to Chicago and St. Louis. From 1896 the company negotiated the company's shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

1894, Goldman withdrew from the business. He died in the summer of 1904.
