Marcus Melchior Lazarus ( born May 26, 1897 in Fredericia, † December 22, 1969 in Hamburg) was a Danish rabbi.

Career

Marcus Melchior came from a well-known Danish Jewish family. His father Arnold Melchior (1857-1922) was an editor, his mother Bertha Torah daughter of Moses Levin Wallach, the rabbi of Faaborg. After doctoral studies at the University of Königsberg in 1921 and the rabbi exam in Berlin, he was a rabbi in Tarnowitz and Bytom.

In 1934 he became rabbi of the Jewish community in Copenhagen. From 1943 to 1945 he took the function of the rabbi of the Jewish refugees from Denmark to Sweden. After the death of Max Friediger in 1947 he became chief rabbi of Denmark. He argued for a reconciliation with Germany.

He had four sons and two daughters, including the politician Arne Melchior and Melchior Binyamin, who succeeded his father in 1969 in the office of rabbi of Copenhagen.
