Margaret of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1442–1512)

Margarete of Brunswick- Lüneburg ( * 1442April 8, 1512 in Vienna Hausen ) was a princess of Brunswick- Lüneburg and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg- Stargard.

Life

Margaret was a daughter of Duke Friedrich II of Brunswick -Lüneburg (1418-1478) from his marriage to Magdalene (1412-1454), daughter of the Elector Frederick I of Brandenburg.

Margaret was in 1452 the third wife of Duke Henry of Mecklenburg- Stargard ( 1412-1466 ). As a dowry she brought 8,000 florins which doubled her husband again. After she became a widow, she lived on her promised dowry in Plau.

After the death of her stepson Ulrich went out the Stargard line and the indebted country passed to the House of Mecklenburg -Schwerin, which did not consider itself responsible for the upkeep of the Stargarder widow. Margaret lived then for a time in Celle. The dispute over her jointure Plau between the houses of Brunswick- Luneburg and Mecklenburg -Schwerin lasted until the death of Margaret.

Margaret spent her 46 years lasting period of widowhood in poor conditions. In letters to her relatives, she stated that she had to suffer even hunger and thirst. In 1499, she was assigned to pressure her father's house Wienhausen Abbey as a permanent residence. Financial support was only by 12 florins of her sister Anna, the widow of her brother Otto annually. She died in Wienhausen Abbey and was buried in the local All Saints' Chapel.

Progeny

From their marriage, Margaret had two daughters:

  • Magdalene (1454-1532)
  • Anna (1465-1498), a nun in Ribnitz
