Margareth Menezes

Margareth Menezes ( born October 13, 1962 in Salvador da Bahia ) is a Brazilian singer of Música Popular Brasileira. It is close to the Samba Reggae and Axé music.

Biography

Menezes was born in a poor neighborhood of Salvador da Bahia. First musical imprints they learned from the religious singing in her church. There she also began very early to sing (hence it is called in Brazil as the Aretha Franklin of Brazil ). As her mother was very fond of music, she learned as a child the rich musical tradition of her Brazilian home state of Bahia know. Menezes singing privately in every possible situation, played guitar and wrote as a teenager first own songs. During this time she performed during Carnival in Salvador for the first time as a singer and as an actress in various theaters of their hometown.

After various appearances in nightclubs as a singer Menezes won at the age of 21 years the Troféu Caymmi as " Best Female performer of Bahia ." She then toured with an eleven-member band throughout Bahia. In 1988, she recorded her first solo album. It had the title: Margareth Menezes. Their second album Elegibô was eleven weeks at number one in the American world music charts. The album was also awarded by the U.S. Billboard Magazine for 10,000 copies sold in the United States.

1989/90, invited the British musician David Byrne Margareth Menezes to participate in his tour through the U.S. and Europe. This pushed the international career of Menezes significantly, especially since the hitherto largely unknown despite their awards by their temperament the supercooled Byrne stole the show. Then came the first successful solo tours of the U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Germany and Belgium. 1995 Menezes played at the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Heimatklänge Festival in Berlin with great success. In 2002, she was featured in the documentary film Moro no Brasil of the Finnish film director Mika Kaurismäki. In the same year she was also a guest on the Tribalistas project by Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes. In 2003, she landed with a large Dandalunda Shit Carnival in Brazil.
