Marie Hall

Marie Pauline Hall ( born April 8, 1884 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England; † November 11, 1956 ) was an English violinist.

Life

Marie Hall received her first lessons from her father, a harpist in the orchestra of the Carl Rosa Opera Company. Additionally, she was taught by a local teacher, Hildegarde Werner. Marie and her family moved around the country and spent several years in Guarlford, a small village near Malvern. When she was nine years old, Émile Sauret heard her play and recommended her parents in vain to send her to the Royal Academy of Music in London. She went on to study under other well-known teachers to play the violin, among other things, Edward Elgar, August Wilhelmj in London, Max Mossel in Birmingham and Professor Kruse in London. On the advice of Jan Kubelik she went in 1901 to Prague at its old tutor Otakar Ševčík.

In 1902, she performed for the first time publicly in Prague in January 1903 in Vienna, and her London debut on February 16, 1902 respectively with great success. The technique she had learned from her teacher claims to Ševčík. Although she did not look very strong physically, she completed long tours with demanding program without showing signs of exhaustion.

Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote The Lark Ascending for Marie Hall and dedicated it to her. She led the piece for the first time in 1921 in the Queen's Hall under Adrian Boult on. Hall played the Viotti Stradivarius, which is now preserved in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

1911 Hall married her manager Edward Baring. The couple lived in Cheltenham and had a daughter, Pauline. For the last years of her life she lived in Cheltenham in a large Victorian Villa, " Inveresk " in the Eldorado Road. Marie is described as a " charming woman, very small and cheerful and with a great sense of humor." She died in Cheltenham on 11 November 1956 at the age of 72 years.
