Marie-Jean-Léon, Marquis d'Hervey de Saint Denys

Marie Jean Léon le Coq, Baron d' Hervey, Marquis de Saint- Denys ( born May 6, 1822 in Paris, † November 2, 1892 ) was a French writer, sinologist and dream researchers.

He was professor of Chinese at the Collège de France and Commissioner for the Chinese empire at the Paris World Exposition in 1867. He translated from the Chinese works of Li Bai into French. These translations flowed - translated into German by Hans Bethge - in Mahler's Song of the Earth one.

He is best known today for his private researches in the field of lucid dreams. At the age of 13 he began to write down his dreams. After some time, he gained the ability to control his dreams and lucid dreaming on a regular basis. In 1867, he anonymously published his findings in the book Les Rêves et les moyens de les diriger.
