Mario Mattei

Mario Mattei ( born September 6, 1792 in Pergola, † October 7, 1870 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and Cardinal Dean.

Life

He was descended from the noble Mattei family. Mattei was ordained a priest in 1817 and subsequently worked as a prelate of the Curia. From 1832 to 1836 he was Bishop of Montefiascone. Pope Gregory XVI. appointed him on July 2, 1832 Cardinal Deacon of the Title of Santa Maria in diakonia Aquiro 1842 to 1844 he was Cardinal Priest of the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Since 1844 Mattei Cardinal Bishop of Frascati. He enforced the will of Gregory XVI. Mattei took part in the conclave of 1846 that Pope Pius IX. chose. From 1860 to his death in 1870 was Mattei Dean of the College of Cardinals. He was also Apostolic legate in Velletri. Cardinal Mattei was among the participants of the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870.

Mario Mattei was not without controversy. He was considered conservative and mediocre church leaders.
