Formation

A few days after signing the record deal EMI booked the Parkgate Studio for ten days. Together with EMI, the three pieces were chosen by Marillion for the first release. The songs had played in the setlist of the band, so no problems are expected. Producer David Hitchcock and the band worked almost continuously in the recordings, due to the lack of studio experience the takes were not ready in time but, so that had to be worked in connection still for a few days at Wessex Sound Studio. The cover was designed based on an idea of Fish by Mark Wilkinson.

The Long Track Grendel is developed from the original instrumental piece The Tower. When Fish was asked to write a text for it, he was reading at the time the book Grendel by John Gardner, based on the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf. In poetry, Grendel is described as a menschenverschlingendes monster that haunts the Danish king Hrothgar, while in Gardner's novel of the same conflict is described from the perspective of the monster. Reviews

" ... This EP has always been a revelation for me. Genesis or not: it was a new beginning within the now very despondent become then Progszene; such a consistent reorientation with so artful "sophisticated" texts had not heard in a while. [ ... ] The main challenge for swarms were the voice and - closely related - the texts: here is Fish true masterpieces supplied, he should no longer hinbekommen after a while even so ... "

"The two short songs on side 1 of the EP are nice, " Three Boats ... " However, a full notch better than the rather inconsequential " Market Square Heroes ". The full-page " Grendel " in turn, is the classic case of dispute. What do you think of this " Supper's Ready for the poor"? Back when I wore proudly the disk home and she heard for the first time, I found the piece is not so bad. The years passed, and when I recently heard the work again, but I was overcome by the rather large yawn - just too predictable and constructed. Somewhere under the dash rather from musik-/prog-historischer relevance and because of the collector value rewarding. "

" Market Square Heroes EP is simply a piece of prog history and excellent addition to any prog rock music collection. "
