Markus Werba

Markus Werba ( born November 14, 1973 in Villach, Austria ) is an Austrian opera singer in the vocal range baritone.

Life

With 16 years Markus Werba began his career with the vocal training. He then studied at the Musikhochschule in Klagenfurt and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Ralf Döring. His further vocal training he continued with Robert Holl and Walter Berry. His particular interest is considered the baritone voices as Count Almaviva, Don Giovanni, Guglielmo and Papageno in operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 1998-2000 Werba was a member of the Ensemble of the Vienna Volksoper. He has participated in numerous international competitions. His career also included the Salzburg Festival, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Bologna and Teatro Malibran in Venice.

His first CD was recorded together with Julius Drake, and includes pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf.

A coincidence in 2005, it was thanks to them that Werba could make his debut as Papageno in Mozart's Magic Flute. The originally intended for the occupation of Simon Keenlyside Papageno was his commitment injury not perceive, so Werba entered in its place. In 2012 he sang the role in the Salzburg Festival production conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Together with the artists Charles Spencer, Julius Drake, Graham Johnson and Helmut German, he was also active as a lieder singer and sang sacred and symphonic works by Brahms, Mozart, and Orff.
