Teatro Malibran

The Teatro Malibran, formerly the Teatro San Giovanni Chrysostom (now mostly Crisostomo ) is an opera house in the Cannaregio district of Venice, located about fifty yards east of the church of San Giovanni Crisostomo. It is known for its exceptional importance for the opera in the 17th and 18th centuries. The theater was richly decorated and covered five floors lodges and a large ground floor. Today there are no more side and rear boxes two ranks.

History

The Teatro Malibran was designed by Tommaso Bezzi for the Grimani family and inaugurated during the carnival in 1678 with a performance of Vespasian by Carlo Pallavicino. The theater at that time had the biggest stage of Venice and was known for his extraordinarily lavish productions and his good singer - known such as Margherita Durastanti who worked here as a prima donna 1709-1712. The heyday of the theater was associated with composers such as Carlo Francesco Pollarolo, Alessandro Scarlatti and Handel. Even the castrato Farinelli was on the stage of this house.

In the 1730s, the decline began as one of the leading theaters of Venice, but that was typical of most theaters in the mid-18th century. In 1737, when Carlo Goldoni was responsible for the theater, his plays and other spectacles were given here. In 1755 the Grimani family opened a new and smaller theater, the San Benedetto, thereby San Giovanni Gristomo lost among the theaters of Venice more important.

After the French occupation of Venice in 1797 this theater was one of the few that were not closed. In 1819 it was purchased by Giovanni Gallo, who restored it in 1834, and in 1837 it was named the Teatro Malibran, in honor of his patron, the famous Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran. In 1849 the Austrians came back to Venice, the only this left open among the many theaters.

1919, the theater was reopened after a number of years and was in the first half of the 20th century a center for opera, operetta and also served as a cinema. In 1992 the theater was purchased by the city of Venice, on this occasion it was restored and extended.

After the fire of the Teatro La Fenice (1996 ) the restoration of the Teatro Malibran progressed quickly and was opened in 2001. Since then the house will be recorded by the ensemble of the Teatro La Fenice. Marcello Viotti, the first musical director after the reopening, foresaw in his use of concept that the house may be used for the performance of baroque repertoire and Mozart operas.
