Masabumi Kikuchi

Masabumi Kikuchi (Japanese菊 地 雅 章, Kikuchi Masabumi; * October 19, 1939 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese jazz pianist and keyboardist. He played with Charlie Mariano, Gil Evans, Gary Peacock, Paul Motian and Terumasa Hino.

Life

He began with six years of playing the piano. In Japan Kikuchi worked with Sadao Watanabe after 1965, and Charlie Mariano. From 1968-1969 he studied at the Berklee College of Music. In 1972 he accompanied the singer Johnny Hartman at a recording session in Japan. In the 1970s he moved to the U.S., where he became in 1978 a member of the Monday Night Orchestra by Gil Evans and as a keyboard player worked on electronic instruments; originated with Gil Evans recorded several albums until 1988 with Paul Motian and Gary Peacock Kikuchi worked in the formation Tethered Moon since 1991.; with her he took in 1999 an album of interpretations of songs by Édith Piaf. It emerged five more CDs of this group, among others, with music by Kurt Weill. In 1993, he took with Terumasa Hino on, with whom he also had her Quintet and published by him in 2007 at Sony last in the quartet. In 1996 he accompanied the singer Helen Merrill, 1997, he worked in the formation in 2000 by Paul Motian Trio.

His friend Paul Motian he owed it by its own account also that he has found other than 70 -year-old with the album Sunrise ( 2011) a departure to free its own composition and away from the interpretation of the works.

Meanwhile, Kikuchi lives quietly in Japan and are rarely concerts.
