Massaguel

Massaguel is a French commune with 421 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Tarn in the Midi-Pyrénées region. It belongs to the district Castres and Canton Dourgne.

Geography

The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Haut Languedoc.

History

About the etymology of the place name, there are two differing views. One group believes the name came from " Massac " and this from the Roman name " Maccius ". The others are of the opinion that the name came from " mass de Agua ", as hiding an underground water tank underneath the place.

To 1152 the place was known as " Macaguel " and an important market town, as he desperately, but ultimately unsuccessfully defended himself in the Albigensian Crusade against the Count Simon IV de Montfort.

1569 took over the Protestants Located in the village castle, when it came to religious conflicts in France.
