Graulhet

Graulhet is a commune with 11,761 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Tarn, in the Midi -Pyrénées; it belongs to the district and Castres is the capital of the canton of the same name. The inhabitants call themselves Graulhetois or Occitan Graulhetous.

Geography

Graulhet is located on Dadou, a tributary of the Agout. The community is located about 22 km south-west of Albi and about 45 km east-northeast of Toulouse. Northwest of the village is situated the Aerodrome de Graulhet - Mont Dragon.

History

961 the place was mentioned as Granolheto with the establishment of the castrum by Raimund I.. But settlement remains can be dated to the period 500-100 BC. A Gallo-Roman oppidum also shows a Roman settlement. Beginning of the thirteenth century led the Albigensian Crusade here in pursuit of the Cathars. Graulhet has long been Gerber site and the center of the leather goods industry.
