Matthias II, Duke of Lorraine
Matthew II (* 1193, † February 9, 1251 ) was Duke of Lorraine from 1220 to 1251 He was the younger son of Duke Frederick II and Agnes of Bar.
Life
He followed in 1220 his brother Theobald I.. He had almost immediately for his brother's wife Gertrude of Dabo, Theobald's widow set up a jointure, including the city of Nancy, who are already two or three months after Theobald's death with his opponents Theobald I, Count of Champagne and King of Navarre married. In addition, he had to recognize as lord of the city Neufchâteau Theobald of Champagne. Matthew II was a loyal follower of the Emperor Frederick II, whom he accompanied on the crusade of 1228. 1235 Matthew was at Frederick in Italy.
Domestically, Matthew looked towards the activities of some of Lorraine 's occupants, including the Earl of Luneville, which was secretly supported by the Count of Bar. The victory of the Duke led to an exchange of territory as well as the merger Lunévilles with Lorraine. In January 1230 years were his opponent Henry II of Bar, Hugh II of Vaudémont and the Bishop of Toul, which devastated his duchy and some castles conquered. 1231-1234 again he fought together with Heinrich von Bar and the citizens of the city of Metz against Jean I d' Apremont. In 1249 he arranged for his son Frederick III. marriage with Margaret of Champagne, daughter of Theobald I of Champagne and Navarre.

He married in 1225 Catherine of Limburg ( † 1255 ), daughter of Walram IV, Duke of Limburg and Luxembourg, and Ermesinde II, Countess of Luxembourg; Among their children were:
