McKinney's Cotton Pickers

McKinney 's Cotton Pickers was an American jazz band that was founded in 1922 by William McKinney in Springfield (Ohio ).

History

The band under the direction of Don Redman, the 1927, the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra left to stay until 1931, the musical director of the Cotton Pickers became known. Under his leadership, the band was next to Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson as the most important precursor of the swing. Members were, inter alia, such well-known musicians such as Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, Roy Eldridge, Doc Cheatham and short term Sidney De Paris.

The formation get just two hits on the Billboard Top 30, in December 1928, " Milenberg Joys " (# 17), which ( among other things with Cuba Austin, John Nesbitt and Todd Rhodes ) was founded at the first recording session in July 1928, as well as a number 1 hit with " If I Could Be with You (One Hour Tonight) " under Don Redman in August 1930 for Victor Records. Their last recording was playing a formation on September 8, 1931, this time under Benny Carter line. The band broke up in 1934 after failed to a great commercial success.
