The river Medveditsa (Russian Медведица ) is a left tributary of the Don in the Saratov Oblast and the Volgograd Oblast, Russia. The name translates as " bear ". According to legend, this name comes from the abundance of bears, which were to be found here earlier.

Geography

The river rises in the northern part of the Medveditsa Saratov Oblast. Only about 30 miles from its source, the river is dammed up to a length of five to seven kilometers and a width of one kilometer. The first major town on the river is Petrowsk. In the Volgograd Oblast the Medveditsa finally flows into the Don.
