Atkarsk

Atkarsk (Russian Аткарск ) is a Russian city with 25,624 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Saratov Oblast. It is located around 92 km north- west of the regional capital Saratov, at the mouth of the river Atkara in the Medveditsa, a left tributary of the Don.

History

At the site of the present town since 1358 there was a settlement of the Tartars. Founded in 1702 Tsarist Russia at the Atkara estuary with a military outpost settlement that is named after the river. At first lived there, especially soldiers who were also active in agriculture in addition to guarding the outpost. 1774, the settlement of Pugachev rebels was captured, later she was released and received in 1780 with the establishment of the government of Saratov officially a town. Beginning of the 19th century the number of Atkarsk around 1200 inhabitants.

Until well into the 19th century Atkarsk was a very poor city, with almost no industry and influenced purely agricultural. An upsurge brought the end of the 19th century railway construction, as Atkarsk got a station on the newly built stretch of Tambov Saratov. This caused a considerable population influx of railway employees, merchants and craftsmen, so that in 1907 already about 13,000 people lived in Atkarsk. With the railroad connection, the importance of Atkarsk as a trading center for the grain trade, which the city, brought economic importance grew.

Even after the October Revolution Atkarsk retained its importance as a trading center for agricultural products. Since 1928 Atkarsk administrative center of Rajons Atkarsk, which was founded in that year.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 338 German prisoners of war of World War II. Heavy sufferers were treated in the POW Hospital 5131.

Architecture and monuments

Architecturally worth seeing is in Atkarsk especially the Old City, which houses some buildings from the early 1900's, the town hall, library and some old school building, the Post and the station building. As other attractions the local museum, and an arboretum with rare tree plants apply.
