Medveďov

Medveďov ( until 1948 slovak " Medve "; German white churches, Hungarian Medve ) is a municipality in south-western Slovakia with 563 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2011). It is located in Okres Dunajská Streda, kraj part of Trnavský.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Great Rye Island ( Žitný ostrov ), a part of the Slovak Danube lowland, immediately on the left bank of the Danube. By a road bridge over the river is connecting to Hungary ( Vámosszabadi and further Győr). The city center is 26 km from Dunajská Streda and 41 kilometers from Komárno.

A portion of the Protected Landscape Area Dunajské luhy ( Donauauen ) is located in the community.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1252 as medwe writing. The name is either Hungarian corruption of the Slavic / Slovak word Medveď (on German Bear) or derived from a proper name. But even before the official mention was probably a settlement, which served to protect the Danube ford. Contemporary documents even speak of two places called Medve. In the Middle Ages Medve was a royal estate, part of the manor of Pressburg, later it belonged to various noble families. 1869 are listed 682 inhabitants; in the 19th century there were many water mills on the Danube.

Until 1919 part of which is in the county Raab place the Kingdom of Hungary and was then Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award 1938-45 Medve came again to Hungary.
